Using this option may only change the timings - and so make the crash only less likely. But there is still a discussion whether there is s.th. to fix in Linux or not. - It might be your power-supply wich simply doens't perform that well ... I had no crashes using a g450 with XFree-4.1 or 4.2 on my Athlon-600/Irongate or AthlonXP-1700+/SiS735 ... even in dual-head and xinerama.
