I did a reinstall using the ftp.xfree86.org binaries, with did not make a
difference.

The configuration created by XFree86 -configure  gives a display with a
colormapping that is almost unreadable.  When I add the lines
    HorizSync  31.5-48.5
    VertRefresh 40-70
to the config file, display is much better, but it the sparkly version
mentioned in my original post.

The log file looks the same ending with the line:

(II)  TRIDENT(0): vgaHWGet IOBase: hwp->IOBase is 0x3d0, hwp->PIOOFFset is0x000

This is repeated thousands of times.
