hi!

i've been trying to sort through the various mails on the internet
about the Intel i830, and my Dell Latitude C400, but haven't had much
luck getting beyond 1MB of RAM and 1024x768x8bit. This is with 4.2.0
downloaded off xfree86.org, and a stock RH7.2 Enimiga or FreeBSD 4.4
ISOs

So, the question is: has anybody

    a. managed to get 16bit colour working?
    b. managed to get this to work without crashing the server or
machine while switching back and forth between console modes?

under RH 7.2, i've tried the following:

    - build a kernel with and/or without the i810/i830 DRM support. but
WITH agpgart support
    - patched i830_driver.c to initialize the StolenSize to 0, which
basically just causes the machine to lock up.

I have NOT been able to figure out how to replace the kernel
i810/i830 DRM support with the stuff in
xfree86/os-support/linux/kernel/drm/i8?0.o. Every time I try insmod on
this, I get a bunch of errors and it doesn't work.

I've heard many freebsd users CAN get X working on various i830
laptops, but then it crashes when switching to and from console modes,
as the OS and XFree86 were having issues coordinating who frees
allocated memory (goofy chip design, i suppose). But these were all
about two months ago with 4.1.x builds ...

any suggestions on things i might try? i at least have 8 bit
working, but i can't ever go back to console, which is a little weak.

    thanks.
    mark.
