Just wanted to say that i've solved my problem, ie. j3d applications no
longer crash on my system :)
It wasn't a mesa problem after all but a video driver problem. The
drivers objected to the shared context on texturing etc. and thus when
it closed it crashed. By specifying that you want shared context's
disabled, the problem is solved:
java -Dj3d.sharedctx=false j3dProgramName
So no longer fear if you are having the same problem with redhat 7.2 and
firegl drivers...
