Tony, I have the same machine, and the same problem. 3d performance is 
very poor .. I think due to Trident not releasing the specs for the 
chipset to the people who need it (like Alan, who I believe maintains 
the Trident driver code) and, more importantly, very poor 3d performance 
from the chipset in the first place.

Even using the XP development drivers direct from Trident gives very 
poor results under Windows.

After some fiddling I found this Device section in my XF86Config gave 
the best results ..

Section "Device"
   Option       "ShadowFB" "true"
   Option       "SWCursor" "true"
   BoardName    "Cyber/BladeXP"
   Chipset      "cyberbladeXPm/16"
   Driver       "trident"
   Identifier   "Device[0]"
   Screen       0
   VendorName   "Trident"
EndSection

I'm using X 4.1.99 built from CVS back in December (I think).
