There was a discussion about this in a FreeBSD group a while back,
and somebody posted an excellent summary of it, but i haven't been able
to find the message since ... :-(
in a nutshell, the problem seems to be that the kernel is
allocating some memory for the graphics card, and when the X server
shuts down, it tries to reallcoate more memory, without freeing up the
old stuff, or something along those lines.
The net result is that the graphics subsystem can't access video
memory any more, and you end up with a screwed up display. amazingly
enough, on my Dell C400, I can restart the X server just fine (although
I still can only do 640x480 or 1024 at 8bit colour :-(). Other users
have reported complete siezure of the console ....
My summary is certainly bad, and I'll try to find the real article
again sometime ...
