As it happens, I solved this problem myself and am now posting this message for the xpert archive. It turns out that Matrox has a very informative support forum at http://forum.matrox.com/cgi-bin/mgaforum/search.cgi?action=intro&default=2 If you search for "G200 MMS" there, a lot of problem reports and their respective solutions are available. In my case, it turned out that switching to XFree 4.0.3 and the 1.3.0 beta driver was necessary.
