Got FreeBSD installed on new Toshiba 1005-s157 Laptop. It has the Intel
i830 agp video driver with 8MB shared memory. Running Xfree86 hangs the
system (actually seems to hang the display only, I can still ping the
machine and do a clean reboot using CTL-ATL-DEL), CTL-ALT-BKS has no
affect. Running it with the vesa driver runs in 320x200 mode only. Can
run with vga driver but only in 16 color 640x480. Following is the list
last part of the log file when I run XFree86 using i810 driver.

P.S Running XF86Free -configure also hangs the systems, but I can run
it successfully by remove the i810_drv.0 module from the drivers folder.
I have tried "NoInt10", "NoDDC", and several other options to no avail.
My brother also has exactly the same laptop and he is getting the same
problems.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Reet.

(EE) I810(0): Couldn't detect display devices.

The specific errors are "Bad V_BIOS checksum" and "ILLEGAL X86
OPCODE". It looks like XFree86 is attempting to execute BIOS calls
but failing to actually find a working BIOS.

In attempts to simplify the setup, I've built a kernel with almost
everything removed (scsi, usb, network, etc). I also changed the
XFree86 configuration to vesa mode and received similar errors:

(WW) VESA(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) VESA(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
c000:01a2: 62 ILLEGAL X86 OPCODE!
(II) VESA(0): VESA BIOS not detected
