I've gone through the Xpert archives, but could find no reference to this, so
I apologize if it has been asked (and answered) before.

I am using VMWare 3.1. build-1690 for Windows 2000 Pro to run RedHat 7.2 in a
virtual machine. I have an IBM A20p laptop that has a native resolution of
1400x1050 (using the ATI Rage Mobility 128).

However, my RedHat 7.2 Guest Client will not display 1400x1050 using the
VMWare-supplied display driver. :(

I've installed the XFree86 v4.2 RPMs, but I keep getting a 'no mode of this
name' error message in my XFree86 log. X then comes up at 1280x1024.

1. Here is my Modeline:

ModeLine "1400x1050" 122.00 1400 1464 1784 1912 1050 1052 1064 1090 -HSync
-VSync

2. Here is an edited version of my log with the irrelevant parts snipped:

In a VMWare usenet group, it was indicated that XFree86 4.2 should work with
the latest vmware_drv.o to give me 1400x1050. However, I can't seem to get
it to work. :(

FWIW, I believe that my modeline is being accepted as I have surrounded it
with two obviously incorrect modelines (999x999). In the log file, I see the
two corresponding error messages complaining about the 999x999 modelines,
with no reference to the 1400x1050 modeline in between them.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks a bunch.
Hanif
