It seems to me that the VT switching problem is due to text consoles not being smart enough to restore a text mode when thay are restarted. Would that be too hard to implement, due to the variety of (sometimes proprietary) video cards? It seems that a console should be able to do it, because the OS has initialized the video card at some point.
