Thank you Neil Leathers and Sean McGlynn for responding. If had
done my homework properly, I would have
(1) located sis_drv.o, thereby answering my own sis driver question;
(2) seen from the XFree86 log that libglide2x.so was needed
but not installed.
Mea culpa.
Revisiting my Mandrake 8.0 installation CDs, I couldn't find an RPM
for libglide2x.so; logging on to rpmfind.net, I found no fewer than
24 listed packages (many of them apparently duplicates).
Of those 24, the only "runtime" versions were for specific video
cards; all the others were "development libraries," the use of which
for me is a black art.
What I'm looking for is a generic, runtime version of libglide2x.so --
if there is such a creature. Given that, I could move on to the next
step.
Inasmuch as libglide2x.so appears to be the missing link, I don't
see much point in sending my X -configure message and XF86Config file
for now. If I'm able to obtain and install libglide2x.so but still
have problems, I'll be in touch.
