Thanks Joe, and to those who have reassured me that my card would work with the older versions! I've reinstalled 4.0.2 using the SuSE rpms, configured using SaX, added the touchscreen bits to the XF86Config, reinstalled the latest Nvidia drivers and...
Works like a dream! A case, I think, of newer isn't necessarily better ;-) (I've had 4.0.2 running one of these touchsreen systems for a couple of months - the one restart was due to a power outage.)
