I have an Alpha LX164 with the same video card running Red Hat 7.1 with
the latest 7.1 Alpha XFree RPMS and have seen the same behavior, so I
think it's a problem with the Permedia driver or card, since it's
happening on completely different machines and architectures.

I've also had the card lock up just doing "normal" X stuff in a GNOME
session.  I simply don't use X on that system any more. :-)
