[Please CC any replies to me, I am not subscribed to the list.] Hello,
I'm using a SONY SDM-M81 LCD panel together with a Radeon 8500 DDR card in 1280x1024 @ 24bpp mode. My XFree86 is version 4.2.0. When I use the analog VGA output from my Radeon card, the colors on my display look normal. However, when using the DVI output, it seems like the color depth is somehow reduced. For example, a simple black-to-white gradient in GIMP consists of just 64 vertical bars. When I switch the display back to the VGA output, everything looks smooth again. (No need to restart anything, so it's probably nothing on the software level.) Now I'm not an expert with graphics card technology, but I found one (unreplied) post in the list archives that might perhaps be connected to this problem: http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/xpert/2001-December/013842.html A short quote from this post: > i'm using the head of the cvs source tree's version of the radeon driver. > the analog port uses 8-bit dacs, but the dvi port only outputs data in 6-bit > mode, ir-respective of settings. i suspect this is a bug in the driver. Again, I don't know much about all this, but 2^6 (bits) is 64, and this is exactly the number of "bars" I get in my gradient. (Yes, I counted that. :-) This is what my XFree86.log has to say on that matter: (**) RADEON(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32 (II) RADEON(0): Pixel depth = 24 bits stored in 4 bytes (32 bpp pixmaps) (==) RADEON(0): Default visual is TrueColor (==) RADEON(0): RGB weight 888 (II) RADEON(0): Using 8 bits per RGB (8 bit DAC) (BTW, everything works fine under Windoze. No "color bars" or anything like that.) Any help would be really appreciated. :-) bye, Rene -- pgp key id 0x8652ffe2; http://www.lionking.org/~kianga/ _______________________________________________ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert
