Does anybody know how to turn of the bigger virtual desktop size, when changing to
lower resolutions?

Once upon a time(was it an 3.x Xserver, i dont remember) it was possible to set the
"Virtual"
Option in the "Display" Subsection of the "Screen" section
in "XFree86Config"
to a lower setting than your maximum mode, which lead to using of a higher virtual
resolution only if i changed to a higher mode than i set in Virtual.

However if i do this nowadays i cannot switch to higher video modes than my Virtual
Resolution anymore.

The problem is. Think about having your usual Desktop at 1280x1024 resolution.
Now you start a game using wine, for example a strategy game like "Total Annihilation"
or "C&C".
It changes to an in-program resolution of 800x600 for example, wine setting the
Xserver this way.

Now if i move the mouse-curser to the right side of screen 2 things happen.

1st The game recognizes the mouse-curser being on the right edge, this way scrolling
the terrain to the right, what i want.
2nd The Xserver uses the oportunity to scroll the whole screen to the right, since the
virtual screen-size is still set to 1280, what i definitely dont want.

Now my question again, is it possible to turn the usage of a virtual desktop off? (and
how)

or at least make the Xserver set the Virtual size always to the real size?

greetings,
Eric

PS: If this is driver dependant: i use a Voodoo3, GLX enabled.

PPS: Of course its possible to work around my specific problem by letting wine grab
the cursor completely, or not to use Windoze games at all, but that's another question
