Thanks a lot! I finally got time to test this on my friend's Thinkpad.
The problem was the frequency ranges. The RedHat install uses a lower
vertical refresh rate for the LCD panel (40-65 or something like that),
so a mode that did not please the panel was being used. Everything is
great now.
