You need framebuffer support in your Linux kernel -- nothing to do
with XFree86 sources.

Xvesa (the other generic KDrive server) should work on all x86
machines, independently of framebuffer support.

No, you don't.  That's probably the legacy 3.3.* Xfbdev server.
