Folks,
I have tried this with the NetBSD crowd, but got only work-arounds, no
solutions, so I turn to you guys, in the faint hope that anyone else
has experienced this and actually understood the reason for it.
I had an IBM ThinkPad X20 that happily suspended whenever I told it
to. It was stolen under return transport from IBM repair centre. I had
removed the HDD since it was not part of the problem (it was a NIC
problem). IBM gave me a new computer (kudos to them for their way to
handle the problem!), which seemingly is identical to the previous
one, hardware wise. It is produced at a later date, though, and has a
later BIOS version.
I installed my old HDD without booting from the shipped drive, and
without touching the software neither on the shipped drive nor my old
HDD.
The new computer will not suspend (command "zzz") if I have X11
running. It will start to flash the suspend LED, and turn off the
screen, but not "power down" properly (e.g., HDD still spinning, and
power LED "on"), and then lock up completely. Hard power off is the
only way out - with following fsck. :-( This happens only if X11 is
running. If I first take down X11 or switch to a different console in
text mode, suspend works fine.
Why is this?
RTFM? (If so, pls. indicate which FM I have neglected to R.)
BIOS setting?
BIOS bug?
NetBSD apm setting?
NetBSD apm bug?
X11 setting?
X11 bug?
Never heard of before?

and I've also tried with GENERIC_LAPTOP with the _one_ modification of
enabling
option APM_DISABLE_INTERRUPTS=0
X11 is 3.3.6, with possible patches by the NetBSD distribution team.
