I have run into the same problem (I had a program that HAD to be killed nicely, as in a c++ exception or message of some sort. Couldn't figure out how to solve the problem of losing xserver connection). A messages would be really sweet (much sweeter than jumping around) because the user could then decide what to do (in my case, throw an exception).
