I think it is safe to expect more from a commercial product, but I didn't expect to see the performance difference provided by Xi's MX Silver X server and the XFree86 X server. The difference is staggering, which makes me wonder if there is a problem. Let's get the specs out of the way...
OS: RedHat Linux 7.2 Kernel: 2.4.18 SMP (agpgart and mga included) CC: gcc 2.96 (RedHat flavor) MainBoard: SuperMicro P4DC6+ Memory: 1GHz (RDRAM) CPUs: 2 x 2.2 GHz Xeon (512) AGP: Matrox G550 (32MB) 4x Mode Monitor: Compaq P910 (1280x1024@24bpp) The test I performed is based on a requirement for a product being produced by my company. I am rendering three different camera signals @30Hz each... 1280x960 Mono (head 2) 640x480 RGB Planer (head 1) 640x480 RGB Interleaved (head 1) I can do all three of these signals at once with the Xi X server with the machine around 80% idle... The problem with the XFree86 X server is it consumes one whole processor. My guess is that the mga driver doesn't have DMA capabilities for 2D rendering. So the poor X performance drops my frame rate on the 1280x960 feed to 10 Hz and the other feeds vary between 20 to 30 Hz. I would appreciate if any one could shed some light on this wide variation. Thanks for the help. Regards, ===== Shane M. Walton, Software Engineer Digital System Resources, Inc.
