The Mesa version included in XFree86 4.2.0 is around 3.3.x I think, but 
surely below 3.5.x which was the development version before 4.0. If you 
read the first item on 3.5 release notes you'd see "internals of Mesa 
divided into modular pieces" - changes which allow take use of the TCL 
(Transform, Clipping & Lighting) abilities existing in recent cards.

That means that _all_ DRI drivers had to be substancially redesigned to 
accomodate that internal changes in Mesa - a non trivial work. In fact, 
this hasn't been done to all cards so far, and some may not see the light 
of a next XFree86 release due to lack of maintainers to do the work.
