One suggestion would be to try to id the Synaptics before sending the sampling rate commands -- those are required to get the IMPS/2 mouse to id itself as an IM instead of a regular PS/2. You might also poke about on the net; there are hacks for the synaptics touchpad which people have posted which adjust all kinds of cool parameters, the synaptics touchpad is used in lots of laptops; perhaps those hacks have some helpful information.
