Note that S3 Savage 3D has no DRI support. The only option for those chips so far is Utah-GLX (http://utah-glx.sf.net) which until very recently just supported XFree86 3.3.0, but has now added some support for XFree86 4.x for some cards only. There several people interested in supporting the Savage chips in the DRI project. I am one of them, as I own a Savage 4 myself. Besides the lack of time so far the biggest difficulty has been getting the chip specifications. I've been trying for a couple of months with several degress of insucess... Nevertheless I still hope that something can be made: the Savage chips, just as the Mach64, spite of being somewhat outdated when compared with the last generation chips, are still fairly common in laptops where there is no upgrade path. For the Savage 3D chips things are a little more brigther as code is already available on Utah-GLX, so it's basically a matter of porting. Let's see how things evolve... I hope this helps.
