First the basics:
I'm running XFree86 4.1.0 installed over an out-of-the-box RedHat7.0 Linux
system (kernel 2.2.16).

I'm trying to get a virtual screen larger than my physical screen
resolution, and have the viewport start at a location other than (0,0). The
first part works easily enough but so far no joy on the second...

The machine is running at 1280x1024, and for test purposes I've added:

Virtual 2000 2000
ViewPort 100 100

to the Display subsection of the XF86Config file (I do not have an
XF86Config-4 file). Running X (either with startx, xinit, or by switching
to runlevel 5 and using the Gnome graphical log in) gives the correct
virtual display size, but the viewport always starts in the top-left of the
virtual display. If I leave the ViewPort line out entirely then there is
still no change (despite the claims in the entry for ViewPort in the
XF86Config man page).

I've been hunting around and I haven't found any examples of people using
anything other than ViewPort 0 0 so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Further details (e.g., full XF86Config file) available on request.

Thanks,
Nick.
