Found out something NEW

First I went back and reinstalled mdk 8.2 with X 3.3.6 so
I would have something to login to. I then reinstalled the
2960 drivers to guarantee that they matched the kernel
version (rather than booting from the CD which is a
different version). Then I updated mdk 8.2 and selected X
4.2 and "do not test, do not start at boot" because those
never work.

Then booted mdk 8.2. As usual I got the blank screen after
the initial boot messages went away. (it isn't actually a
black screen, it is a blank screen which is slightly
illuminated). I thought, what the hey, why don't I try to
login as root, even though I can't see anything. IT WORKS!
There is just no display coming to the screen. So the
console login does work even if it is useless with no
display. From the disk activity I can see that commands
such as ls do work. Tried to run XFdrake but the screen
still stays blank. Went back, booted from the CD, and
added nvidia and glx to the X config file and rebooted but
as usual it doesn't change anything.

Also noticed something in one of the logs from a X 4.2
attempted boot today about not finding the default fonts.
Don't know if this would explain the console or X
problems. "failed to set default font path unix/:-1 could
not open default font fixed" I don't understand the
unix/:-1 syntax (although it looks like something from my
old VMS days)
