The problem is most probably old driver where dri and xf86 don't play well
together and one turns off DMA while the second one needs it.
Upgrade to:
- Latest DRI, e.g. from DRI-CVS
- Latest ati.2 binary from gatos.sf.net

XF86 4.2.0 and RedHat 7.2 is ok, no need to upgrade.
