Please help...

I need to compile a functional, but small Xwindows system. It needs to
include a few basic tools, say things like twm, xterm, etc.; and of course
the X server itself. I would also like to create a small, what ever minimum
I can get away with, set of fonts.

How can I configure to do this.

I've tried just enabling in the host.def the things I need, and disabling
other, but I always seem to get errors caused by something missing. Many of
this, I don't know what is, therefor I don't know what's required, and
what's not.

I've tried to find some information on this subject, both in this list's
archives, and other places on the web. Nothing I've found so far seems to
work or be applicable to my target.

Target system:
5x86 128 MHz CPU,
CHIPS W69000 PCI Video controller.
32 MB Ram
Linux Kernel 2.4.18
Running off 64 MB Compact Flash (on IDE bus).

Some background on the target system.
I'm a Linux developer for Octagon Systems, designer and manufacturer of
embedded PCs / SBCs.
I'm working on a new SBC, based on the ZFMicro MachZ chip (I didn't chose
the hardware, but this is a pretty neat, functional, small design). Many
on-board features, and all the custom hardware drivers are now complete. My
last goal is to get XFree86 up and running on this design. Previously, I've
been trying to use a manually stripped down XFree86 Version 4.1.0, which I
copied only the necessary components. There are 2 problems: 1. Font
directory is HUGE, does it really need to be that big? 2. While it runs OK
in VGA (16 color 640x480) trying to run the CHIPS driver results in a signal
11. To attempt to remedy the second (and possibly the first) I've
downloaded all the source ver 4.2.0, and am attempting to compile to a
reasonable size. No luck so far.

Once compiled, and installed, I'll need some suggestions on debugging the
CHIPS driver, but I've got to get a build that works first.

Any help / suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!
