It used to freeze for me (because the 2d accel functions were turning off DMA), but this was already fixed last year already.
Are you sure you have the latest: - DRI kernel modules - gatos drivers ? I have a ATI AIW 128 (non-pro), AND a separate capture card, 2 soundcards and a SCSI burner and can use it all simultaneously (Xv, OpenGL and other stuff). The only stability problem are some 3d functions and this is easily worked around by by using Option "XaaNoPixmapCache" The other problem is that Xv(Shm)PutImage eats too much CPU, but this doesn't cause any instability.
