Perhaps "blurry" was the wrong choice of word, but you can see what
I'm talking about with the following screenshots.  The fonts are 
anything but crisp.

If I specifically choose a font like:

-adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*

that looks fine.  But I don't want to have to do this for every
application I use.  (XEmacs, KDE, etc.)

So again, when an application chooses the font:

-*-Courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*

for example, how do I find out what font this maps to?  The problem is
the same for other fonts like Helvetica.  For whatever reason, the
default fonts are really terrible; I've never had this problem
with X11 before.
