I'm no professional at all, but in the Xlib programming manual on the
net I found that the Protocol Request GetImage (Xlib function XGetImage)
does:

"This function specifically supports rudimentary screen dumps."

(the x11perf manpage tells that it performs a GetImage with 500x500
square upon the -getimage500 parameter)
