I've been playing with Linux from Scratch for a while now, including building
XFree86 and DRI from CVS to test some updates to the glint/gamma support on
my GVX1 card. Unfortunately the driver is still only 2D. The only source for
3D acceleration is xig's commercial driver. Now that xig has finally included
the RENDER extension and full screen AA, I thought I'd build a fresh box from
scratch and install the xig Accellerated-X instead of XFree86 to avoid any
problems, and then build KDE on top of this. Unfortunately, after looking
through the RPM from xig, it seems that only the OpenGL libs and includes are
included. Therefore it would not be possible to build anything else.
Below is a recent conversation with the xig support team. Their suggestion is
to build the libs and headers from XFree86 and install their Accelerated-X
server on top. My question is, is it possible to build and install ONLY the
libs and headers and such, or will I need to build the entire XFree86 and
then install Accelerated-X on top of it? I would like to have as clean an
installation as possible which is why I was hoping to only install
Accerated-X without XFree86.
Of course this is only until the 3D acceleration gets fixed in XFree86. Thank
you for any information.
Cheers,
John Gay

Well, you'd only need to X environment (libs, headers etc)... Then
install the X server after all that is done...

The only problem you would run into is the OpenGL libraries... ie:
Mesa. Just don't build that. Or if you do, just be sure to install
accelx afterward.

Yes ;-)
