I couldn't swear to it, but I think that the RandR support stopped overlay from allowing the default visual to be set in the config file (although -cc 4 on the command line still works). I haven't had a chance to investigate properly. I still can't understand why it makes a difference running as root. -- Dr. Andrew C.
