You are most likely using a laptop that has an
"intel 845G"
integrated grafics and hostbridge chipset.
I must assume that this chipset was not at all
supported by XFree86 when RedHat 7.1 was "burnt" to Gold-Release.
Meanwhile there was a RH 7.2, 7.3 and even 8.0 version
with likely much better support for your hardware.
I thought, RedHat does deliver some updates over
the livetime of the respective product...
Since 7.1 there has almost passed a year and
i think that some chipset documentation from
Intel made it to the XFree86 and the DRI developers,
so that you will be best served with on of the
latest releases, which might be 4.2.0 or 4.2.1
with development state of about Spring 2002 (4.2.0)
and latest security fix from Summer 2002 (4.2.1).
You can possibly update XFree86 system without
breaking anything else on your system,
but thats a thing which you must just try out.
If you think you need bleeding edge drivers,
then you should think of getting X11 binary snapshots
or CVS sources for self compilation. But only
think of this if you are an andvanced admin.
