Cool setup, perhaps you could remove the chassis from each monitor in order to make them stand nearer to each other?
I had similar problems with my multihead setup. The second seemed not to be initialized when first starting the X server. When I booted my system the second screen was totally black. Starting startx the first time failed. But after that first time the second head wasn't black anymore but showed some two-line VGA-BIOS info at the top. When the second head woke up from black-nothing into show-bios-info-mode startx always worked out. I was able to make this whole thing work from the very beginning by enabling the console on my second head, using fbcon. Then startx succeeded the first time. To me it seems that this must be because the card wasn't booted or initialized by the BIOS the first time I called startx. Fbcon seemed to initialize/boot the card.
