Thanks for the reply.

 From this i can conclude that the gimp does not choose the display size 
relative to the dpi of the display, i assumed 10cm at whatever dpi would 
always be scaled to 10cm on the particular display.

So really unless i set the resolution to 1024x768 i'm not going to get 
72pdi on a 45cm monitor.
