It really is a first draft. I tested it exactly twice (once on a
compiled PCF and once on a compiled BDF), and it never occurred to me
to test it on an uncompressed font.
As it stands, and unless I'm grossly mistaken, it also cannot possibly
compile within the server-side FreeType backend.
