does it occur with other OSs also, like Windows?
Since the problem does -according to your description- not seem to be
related to any specific application and may occur after an arbitrary
stretch of time, have you observed a relatedness to system load in
general?

I mean, have you ruled out thermal problems (CPU overheating?) which
would definitely cause symptoms like you describe...

been there, too...  8-(
