I would guess DRI support. Do you have "dri" enabled in your XF86Config-4? If yes, try commenting that out. I've been trying to get my Radeon 7500 clone running from CVS, and if I don't load the dri module in XFree86, everything seems to work quite well. Building and installing the new radeon module to /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/kernel/drivers/char/drm caused dri to be detected and started, but with the whole system crashing hard withing the next 2 minutes of X start.
