hi,

i already asked this in march 02, but did not get much of an answer. maybe now
somebody is interested.

i am looking for the capability to mirror the keyboard layout when the space-bar
is pressed, so that one can touch-type with one hand. this is good for blind
people, because they then can have one hand on the braille display, and type
with the other, or for applications where you have the mouse in one hand, and
for many mor occasions.
originally this was marketed as the 'matias half-qwerty' as a hardware solution,
but it should not be too hard to implement it in software (in fact, it was
already done for winDOS and mac).
there already is a kernel patch for this:
http://repetae.net/~john/computer/hk/
but it is faulty. if you do not release the letter key early enough, it swallows
the space char. i know that it would be possible to use it if i disabled xkb,
but this is not feasible in my opinion.
what i am looking for is a function that can be disabled at will, and ideally
would not require recompilation of the kernel or xfree86.
there is also a patch for the x-server:
http://lists.canonical.org/pipermail/kragen-hacks/2002-July/000351.html
but it also seems to be faulty (i did not test it myself).
dan linder, who worked on accessX some time ago, said that possibly this function can
be implemented without coding, by using a specialized xkb keyboard definition or
something.
if anybody has any ideas or knows somebody who is willing to look into this, i
would very much appreciate to hear from them. i am willing to put some time into
this, but need some help to do it. maybe somebody can point me to people working
on xkb?

cheers

stefan
