Looking forward to finishing it and freeing up a gig or two of disk
space.

No, how do I have X watch for and tell me that there is data to be read
from multiple fds.

I have found a bit of a hackish, but workable solution, namely that I
can make up a second 'input device' which does nothing, without an
additional config entry.

This is good enough for what I need, though if there is a cleaner way I
would definitely be interested in it.

For those interested, it will be for notifications over (most likely) a
FIFO from hotplug scripts, telling us about devices being added/removed.

Well, back to the code.
