I had the same problem with the 'fixed' fonts after upgrading KDE stuff.
The problem is some RPM makes /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias
readable by root only. I fixed the problem with

chmod a+r /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias
service xfs restart

Then the X server starts fine.
