s3-before-switch-vt.jpeg: is what I see when I first get into my gnome session s3-after-switch-vt.jpeg: is a fake screenshot that shows what I see on my monitor after I switch to VT1 and back to X. I hope this is makes it more clear as to what my problem is. > this setup works perfectly with XFree 3.3.6 (but not with IBM P50 as the > setting, I have to choose a different refresh rate otherwise there is this > terrible flickering when I click anywhere). > ok, i switched the monitor with a VX700 (which is known to work well on another system) and i *still* get the same problem (i tried various monitor settings and it didn't help). this leads to the conclusion that the xfree 4.2.1 s3 driver is buggy (not monitor problems) yet 3.3.6 works fine. if i change the driver to "vga" (640x480x256), then only the bottom half of the screen is displayed (the top half is like a black hole, if you move the mouse pointer there it disappears until you move it back down). so, i can't even use a "generic vga" driver... so what could be wrong with xfree 4.2.1 support for s3 trio 64v (735)? pesarif
