I think you've misunderstood his request.  He's looking for the new-since-Lion 
full-screen mode, where an app (or, actually, an individual window) goes 
full-screen to a new "space", and you can swipe back and forth.  Doesn't have 
anything to do with HiDPI, Retina displays, or xrandr.

I would say that's pretty hard to fit into the paradigm of an X server, which 
serves many clients and is not dedicated to a single app or window.
