hi all, just an update on this issue. i tried to have a dialog with ken about the possibility of his taking me up on my offer, but he went AWOL. since then, i upgraded to Mavericks and haven't seen the problem since. i doubt the underlying bug has been squashed, but i'm pretty thrilled with the current wallpaper covering it, for now :)
