It's not the symlink that's the problem. It's the dylib version. It would work as intended if it had a current version of 8.0.0 and a compat version of 7.0.0.
Thanks for catching this. Please file a ticket. As mentioned before, the entire problem with the 2.7.9 solution was that we can't have two different copies of libXt in the same process because the dependents don't necessarily respect layering.
