Could you file a bug report for this at 
https://github.com/XQuartz/XQuartz/issues/new

It should be a simple fix to add a 'cd ~' to the startx script to ensure this 
is consistent.  We do that in XQuartz.app's startup script, but should probably 
do the same for startx.
