What?

This is NOT going to break my distro. 
For 25 years I've been doing custom software installs on Unix/Linux when
necessary out of the package system.
Not every application or version that you might want to install is
available in a package.  So that is exactly what /usr/local is for.
Yes, you have to keep track of these custom installed applications yourself.
But in no way do they *break* your distro.
