Well I did make some progress. It turns out that you get this (rather misleading) message if you are out of X displays on the system. I "appear" to be out of them because of a bunch of orphaned entries in /tmp/.X11-unix/... I removed them (and a couple of Xvnc processes as well) and was able to connect. I have not figured out how we got into this situation thought. wcn
