I have here a double

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5504 @ 2.00GHz

which runs virtual desktops faster than any of our PCs.

The machine exposes 8 CPUs to the host kernel - 2 physical x 2 cores x 2
threads - on which we are running Vmware 2. This server has a Gbe NIC,
connected to a Gbe network. We ran rdesktop from a brand new laptop which also
includes a Gbe NIC.

Results:

Using vimeo, the CPU on the virtual machine goes to >90% .

Using youtube, the CPU on the virtual machine is goes to a lower usage ~60-70%
and the video is smoother.

In both cases fullscreen playback saturates the guest virtual CPU and uses 3-4
of the visible processors on the host.

The CPU on the client laptop is not stressed at all.

The network traffic between client and server is well down 100Mbps.

Thus, I'm starting to think that there is a problem on how Vmware handles
video workloads, because this host machine is not supposed to be stressed by a
ridiculous youtube/vimeo window.

Cheers
Gustavo
