Last year at the FOSDEM conference at Brussels I went to a talk on the RedHat SPICE desktop remoting solution. There was a part of the talk on USB redirection, and the speaker told that usbip had too many issues, including buffering et al., and they went for a redeveloppement for SPICE project. They may have been preaching for their own parish... but I personally also had a very difficult time to get usbip to work properly. I haven't tried recently though. I don't know if the usb remoting part of SPICE can be easily extracted of the whole project, but if it is the case it could be a good starting point.
